How to Choose a Photo for Personalized Gifts

A good photo for a personalized gift is sharp, well lit, and large enough for the product's print area. Start with the original image, leave room around the subject for cropping, and check the designer's image-quality guidance before ordering.

1. Start with the original photo

Use the original file from your camera or phone when possible. Screenshots and copies saved from messaging or social media can lose detail. Enlarging a small image does not restore missing detail.

2. Match the photo to the print area

A wide family portrait may suit a wide print area, while a close-up may work better in a smaller portrait area. Check the selected product's shape and the pixel dimensions recommended in its designer. There is no single image size that fits every product.

3. Leave space for cropping

Keep faces, ears, paws, and important details away from the edges. For wraparound designs or products with seams, check every available view. Where the designer shows a bleed or red boundary, extend the background beyond it while keeping important details inside the safe area.

Choosing photos for different gifts

  • Pet photos: choose a sharp image with the eyes in focus and a background that separates your pet from its surroundings.
  • Family or wedding photos: make sure every face remains visible after cropping. A wide group photograph may need a different product or layout.
  • Children's drawings: photograph the artwork straight on in even light, avoiding shadows and reflections. Crop out the surrounding table before uploading.

4. Check your design before ordering

Open the selected product and choose DESIGN NOW where available. Upload your image, adjust its position, and check the available views. Review spelling, names, size, and selected options before adding the design to your cart. A digital preview helps you assess placement; screen colors and physical print colors can differ.

Common questions

Can I use a photo taken on my phone?

Yes, an original phone photo can be suitable if it is sharp and meets the selected product's image requirements. On a computer, keep the original file available for upload. Available upload controls can vary by device and designer.

What if the designer says my image quality is low?

Try a higher-resolution original, reduce how much you enlarge the image, or choose another photo. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering.

Can I use someone else's photo or artwork?

Only upload images you own or have permission to use for the intended product. If a photographer took your photo, check your usage permission. You can also explore our licensed artist collections.

How do I plan a gift for a specific date?

Check the product's collection and destination against our current Shipping & Delivery policy before ordering. Allow extra time for a date-sensitive gift; delivery estimates can be affected by carrier or customs delays.
