Teaching AI with Thousands of Human Reactions

One of the most important projects in this area comes from researchers associated with Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI. They created a large dataset known as ArtEmis that pairs more than 81,000 paintings from a major online art encyclopedia with around 440,000 emotional responses written by over 6,500 people.

For each artwork, viewers selected one of eight emotions such as amusement, awe, contentment, excitement, anger, fear, disgust, or sadness, plus an open “something else” category, and then wrote a short explanation of why they felt that way. Those explanations often talk about subtle signals: a hand reaching out, a small figure standing alone, two bodies turned toward each other.

Using these paired images and texts, researchers trained “neural speaker” models that look at a painting and generate an emotionally grounded caption, such as “This makes me feel peaceful because the couple is holding hands under a calm sky.” In tests, people sometimes struggle to tell these machine-written explanations apart from human ones.

Love is not a category in ArtEmis, but many of the labels and explanations circle around it. A sense of contentment, awe, or gentle excitement in the presence of another person can all be parts of how love feels. By learning how those feelings map onto visual cues and verbal descriptions, machine learning systems start to grasp the broader emotional constellation in which love lives.

Finding Where Emotion Lives Inside an Image

A second line of research digs even deeper, asking not only which emotion an artwork evokes, but exactly where in the picture that emotion comes from. A benchmark dataset called APOLO, published in a scientific imaging journal, builds on ArtEmis by adding pixel-level annotations for thousands of artworks.

Annotators looked at art–emotion pairs and traced the specific regions responsible for the felt emotion, linking them to nouns in people’s explanations. Even simple computer-generated images can make us feel something. A psychological study of abstract black-and-white grid artworks asked participants to rate their aesthetic reactions and emotions. Some of the grids were human-made, some were generated by an algorithm, and each was preceded by a label saying it was human-made or computer-made. These labels were only half accurate.

Participants reported feeling at least some emotion toward about three-quarters of all artworks they saw. Human-created grids were rated as more beautiful and more emotionally arousing on average, but people still attributed intentions and feelings to algorithmic pieces, especially when primed to think a human was involved.

This echoes everyday experience with generative art. People gasped at the GAN-generated “Portrait of Edmond de Belamy,” which sold for about $432,500 at auction, and a robot artist’s portrait of Alan Turing that fetched around $1.08 million. Yet studies from Columbia Business School show that when people know a piece is AI-generated, they tend to value it far less than visually similar art labeled as human-made. In one experiment, the same images were valued about 62 percent lower when labeled as AI art, even though participants agreed that the technical skill seemed comparable.

Deep down, many of us still want to feel a human heartbeat behind the piece we hang on our wall or place in a gift box. Research in cognitive science and aesthetics, including discussions in medical journals, suggests that people assign special value to human agency, intention, and what one influential thinker called the “aura” of an original artwork.
